NOTIFICATION OF APPLICATIONS FOR DISCRETIONARY PUBLICATION BANS

A party in a criminal matter, in the Vancouver and New Westminster Registries, who wishes to obtain a discretionary publication ban or an order excluding the public from the courtroom, is required by practice direction to complete the form on this page to notify subscriber media outlets of the application.

The form on this page is to be completed by counsel or the party making an application which is subject to the practice direction.

Once completed and confirmed, the information contained in the form will be automatically emailed to all subscribers. For that reason, the specific information (i.e. witness or complainant’s name or identifying information) sought to be protected by a publication ban should not be included in the application form.

Completion of this form is solely for the purpose of notifying subscribers that an application will be made. To obtain an order for a ban, the appropriate materials need to be filed with the registry in accordance with the Criminal Rules and the matter needs to be spoken to in court.

This page is maintained by the Supreme Court of British Columbia.
